How does AddEvent handle time zones for calendar events?
AddEvent handles time zones automatically when you set a named time zone on your event - the event displays at the correct local time for each attendee, regardless of where they are in the world.
Named time zones vs. fixed UTC offsets
Named time zones (recommended): Set your event to "America/New_York", "Europe/London", "Asia/Tokyo", etc. AddEvent uses the IANA time zone database, which means daylight saving time transitions are handled automatically. An event at 7 PM ET will correctly shift for EDT/EST transitions without any manual adjustment.
Fixed UTC offsets: Setting UTC-5 instead of a named zone means the offset is frozen. If your event is near a DST transition, attendees in your target time zone may see the wrong time. Avoid fixed offsets for events scheduled around DST change dates.
What attendees see
When an attendee adds the event to their Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, or Outlook, the event is stored in your specified time zone. Their calendar app then converts and displays it in their local time zone automatically.
For example: an event set to 3 PM Europe/Copenhagen will show as 2 PM for a UK attendee (BST), 9 AM for a New York attendee (EDT), and 9 PM for a Tokyo attendee (JST).
Multi-timezone events
If your event has a global audience, include the time in multiple time zones in the event description - for example, "3 PM CET / 9 AM ET / 6 AM PT". This helps attendees confirm the time before adding to their calendar.
The time zone selector widget
AddEvent offers a time zone selector widget you can embed on your event landing page. Visitors select their time zone and see the event time converted for them before clicking Add to Calendar.
