Making Genomics Matter: Science, Storytelling, and Public Engagement
Speakers: Tina Lasisi, PhD, Janina Jeff Ringo, PhD
Moderator: Grace Byfield, PhD
This forum examines how genomics research and science communication can be conducted in ways that center community trust, accountability, and broad public engagement. Drawing on population genetics, biological anthropology, and the practice of science communication across diverse platforms and audiences, it highlights evidence-based approaches for making genomic knowledge accessible, meaningful, and effective. Featuring population geneticist Janina M. Jeff Ringo, PhD, and biological anthropologist Tina Lasisi, PhD, and moderated by Grace Byfield, PhD, the discussion will explore key questions: How should scientists communicate findings about human diversity and ancestry to communities most affected by genomic research? How can storytelling and creative media build public trust in science? And how can scientists move beyond dissemination to genuine mutual learning with the publics they serve?
