About the YPSO
Founded in 1936 by pioneering conductor Jessica Marcelli, Young People’s Symphony Orchestra (YPSO) is the oldest youth orchestra in California and the first independent youth orchestra in the nation. At a time when opportunities for women in conducting were rare, Marcelli forged a path not only for herself but also for generations of young musicians who would go on to achieve success in music, the arts, and the sciences.
Today, YPSO continues her legacy by providing advanced orchestral training to talented young musicians ages 11-21, from 5 Bay Area counties, fostering musical excellence, leadership, and community engagement. Under the direction of Maestro David Ramadanoff, YPSO performs a dynamic repertoire spanning classical masterworks to contemporary compositions, while also emphasizing mentorship, collaboration, and outreach. Many YPSO alumni go on to pursue careers in music, while others apply their discipline and creativity to fields such as engineering, medicine, and technology.
Through performances, educational programs, and partnerships like this SLMath-YPSO joint community concert, YPSO remains dedicated to inspiring the next generation of musicians and innovators. For more information, visit ypsomusic.org.
