In 1841, a young Japanese fisherman named Manjiro was shipwrecked on a desertedisland where he was found and rescued by Captain William Whitfield. The Americanwhaling ship captain brought Manjiro back with him to his home in Fairhaven, MA,where he welcomed him as a son. This friendship would turn out to have a powerfulglobal impact, as Manjiro returned to Japan years later and became critical to futureU.S.-Japan relations. Please join us in honoring the lasting friendship of Manjiro and Whitfield inour online event with the Japan America Society of Chicago. We will hearfrom Gerald P. Rooney, President and CEO of the Whitfield-ManjiroFriendship Society, who is central to keeping the Manjiro-Whitfield legacyalive.
