With a population of 10 million, Los Angeles County (LAC) is the largest in the nation with a population density of 2,400 people/square mile. Compared to the US, the county has a higher level of poverty (11% vs. 13%), a higher percentage of households that speak a non-English language (22% vs. 57%), and a higher percentage of individuals from racial/ethnic minority populations (40% vs. 74%). Assessing equitable access to affordable dental care in such a diverse and population dense county is problematic. The LAC Oral Health Program used GIS mapping to overlay population density, poverty levels, and safety-net dental clinic staffing to spatially analyze Dental Deserts; defined as high-risk areas with limited access to affordable dental care. Fifty different square mile blocks were identified as Dental Deserts with the majority being in southcentral LAC. These findings are being used to build support for expanding dental services in the Dental Deserts.
