Materiality Matters
by Natasha Vaidya
The creative processes for creating art in ceramic and painting involve distinct physical and artistic approaches. Equally, the resulting artworks by Yoojoo Kim and Judith Trepp may appear to address the viewer in divergent ways. Yet through their use of abstraction, both artists place emphasis on materiality – the physical expression of their artistic concepts – to create meaning.
This lecture will touch briefly on the intersection of traditional and contemporary East Asian painting and ceramic practices, and will explore the exhibited artworks through the lens of materiality, describing how it is employed to generate space and time in which the viewer in encouraged to engage with them.
