Author and historian PearlAnn Reichwein's talk will focus on the Banff School's origins and the experience of its students, teachers, and branding Banff. In 1933, the Banff School was established as an adult education summer outreach program of the University of Alberta. Situated within Banff National Park, the school combined stunning natural scenery and cultural capital in a symbolic national landscape.
Based on her new book Uplift, co-authored with Karen Wall, Dr. Reichwein offers a nuanced account of one particular engine of nation building and tourism development. Since its origins, it has become a cultural destination and educational institution, renowned today as the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.
