About the Artist
Marilyn Levin received her MFA from UCLA where she studied with Richard Diebenkorn. She has shown at the Weisman Museum, Minneapolis, MN, the Broad Institute at MIT, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Artists Gallery. Her work is included in many museum and corporate collections, including the Rose Art Museum, the Kresge Collection at Harvard University, and the Federal Reserve Bank, Boston. Levin taught at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts/Tufts University dual degree program for 30 years before settling in the Bay Area.
About the Exhibit
Levin's work is about improvisation, chance and intuitive risk-taking. Architecture and structure are an important part of her visual vocabulary. Her process involves building surfaces with layers of oil paint, pouring and scraping through layers to reveal unexpected color relationships, textures, and reflective light. Her recent work focuses on the unstable times we are experiencing – alienation and environmental chaos.
