What If…You Had a Vote in Everything That Shaped Your Day? From the workplace to the block to the ballot, what co-ops, citizen assemblies, and participatory budgeting teach us about practicing shared power every day.

What if democracy wasn’t just tied to the election cycle, but was an everyday experience?  What would it feel like to experience true empowerment, genuine shared agency, as a normal part of our daily lives? In this curious conversation we will explore real examples of time tested models for weaving this practice into your life between elections. Grounding in other forms of civic participation - like participatory budgeting, and citizen assemblies - we will dive deeply into the world of Cooperatives, and learn what Housing Co-ops and Worker-Owned Businesses can teach us about the learning and liberation available to us by living democracy, daily.

About Kate:
Kate Sassoon is a “co-op native” who acquired the nickname ‘Sassy’ during her time organizing direct action against the Iraq War, and it has stuck to her – and all her endeavors – like a billboard and a bill of rights (she can't imagine why).

Having participated in a wide variety of innovative member-and-mission-driven organizations for over 25 years, Sassy has a wealth of experience in: organizational culture, change management, education and training, community organizing, mission-driven strategic planning, democratic decision making process design, conflict management, and mediation. She has served on Boards of Directors large and small, teaches at numerous conferences across the US, and holds two degrees from the University of California, Berkeley.

Sassy is passionate about supporting innovative organizations committed to building a better world. Whether it’s overhauling a dead and disengaged meeting process, teaching a diverse group to collaborate equitably, or designing  an energizing strategic planning retreat – when working with these groups, she always emerges feeling privileged to participate. She delights in deep questions, unexpected connections, and doing well by doing good.
