Show, Don’t Tell. What does it really mean? How can we use it in stories? We’ll review the true meaning and how it connects to point of view, setting, and description. We’ll discuss how this tool helps connect reader to our stories, what ‘tell’ looks like, and how to change it to ‘show.’ We’ll review the before and after examples from books and music, and from attendee in class exercises. Great workshop for any level of writer who wants their stories to be powerful.
Most writers have heard Show, Don’t Tell. What is it and how do we use it in stories? We’ll review the meaning of the phrase and how it connects with readers. Class covers writing in the active voice, how the tool assists with character development, how the tool helps us create engaging and visual settings, and how the tool and point of view are interconnected. Examples from books and songs will be used.
Students will:
•Understand what the phrase means for their story.
•How to identify ‘telling’ prose
•How to convert ‘telling’ to ‘showing’
•When it is okay to tell
•How to use point of view to heighten Show, Don’t Tell
