Melissa has been the Principal Tenancy Adjudicator since September 2014. She came to the role after four years as deputy chair of the Immigration and Protection Tribunal, and, prior to that, was deputy chair of two of the former immigration appeal authorities. She was previously a senior lecturer in law at Victoria University of Wellington.
Melissa has a strong interest in access to justice at the tribunal level. Her focus in the immediate future is guiding the Tenancy Tribunal through the transition to a new end-to-end online tenancy adjudication system, and resolving the legal questions concerning new issues in the tenancy jurisdiction, including methamphetamine contamination, landlord insurance/tenant liability for damage and unlawful housing.
