Why should a clinician undergo altered states themselves? This Impulse talk sets the mystical framing aside and makes a professional case: self-experience as a diagnostic instrument. A clinician who has navigated non-ordinary states knows their own reactivity, blind spots and countertransference from the inside, under conditions that resemble the patient's.

The talk takes the controversy seriously. The empirical case for mandatory self-experience is contested, and the legal, ethical and safety constraints are real. It presents a defensible model that is structured, supervised, bounded and oriented toward professional development rather than personal transformation, and it is clear about what self-experience is for and where its limits lie. The self-experience modules of the Augmented Psychotherapy Training (APT) are built on this professional, not initiatory, rationale.
The talk is followed by an overview of APT, the MIND Foundation's training in psychedelic-augmented psychotherapy, with time for your questions. A few places are still open in cohort 9, which starts on 7 November 2026 in Berlin.
