Celebrate Black Storytelling Week!
This year’s theme is, “What we inherit, what we pass on.” What lessons have tattooed themselves on your heart? Whose features did you receive? What recipes have you been entrusted to keep? What prayers were you taught? What land has your name on it? This year is a call to reflect on, honor, or release the tangible and intangibles that pass through generations: lessons, recipes, heirlooms, traditions, gifts, blessings, dreams, habits, features, land, and more.
How to Celebrate
The best way to celebrate Black Storytelling Week is with people you love and who love you back. Whether its spending an afternoon learning a recipe from an elder; gathering your cousins to finally begin that family tree project; showing a little one photos of their ancestors; envisioning a new family with your friends; or some solo journaling, meditation, and reflection; there is no one way to mark this occasion.

"What We Inherit:" A Black Storytelling Week Story Circle

What lessons have tattooed themselves on your heart? Whose features did you receive? What recipes have you been entrusted to keep? What prayers were you taught? What land has your name on it? Join us for a virtual storytelling circle about the lessons, recipes, artifacts, gifts, blessings, cycles, habits, features, land, and more that have passed between generations. Together, we'll reflect, celebrate and release things we've inherited, and dream about we'd like to pass on.
Think of this storytelling circle as a virtual campfire: an intimate, participatory and gentle space to share and express memories while being held in community. We ask that everyone come prepared to share. There is no criteria for who or what your story can be about, but we do ask you be considerate when it comes to disturbing or graphic content.
Things to know:
- Get cozy! Maybe light a candle, prepare your favorite snack, or make a cup of tea
- Show and tell is welcome. Bring an artifact to show to the group if you have one.
- Everyone has a role. This is not a stage, but a circle. While listening, we ask folks to show their support by being as present as possible.
Celebrate your loved ones, preserve your people's stories, and spend the day making something together at Black Storytelling Fest in Brooklyn, NY. Whether your family is adopted, given, or chosen, this celebration is for you. Bring your grandma, your play cousins, your love, or your best friends - whoever you call family.
