Across Woodbridge, Core City, Corktown and Ann Arbor, a group of artists, poets, and musicians are celebrating Imbolc, the name of the Pagan festival native to the Gaelic and Celtic peoples across Ireland and Scotland. Public events are planned from Friday, February 2nd through to Sunday, February 4th from live electronic and audio installations at the new Core City store Periodicals to the debut of Detroit-based, Kresge Foundation awardee Ackeem Salmon’s latest work, Dancin’ Fi Moonlight at 27th Letter Bookstore. Detroit-based artists and poets will lead the opening candlelight Ritual, and a collective collagemaking with Immaculate Conception Collective will debut at the Ann Arbor Public Library.
The weekend-long celebration offers a warm counterpoint to the cold isolation of deep winter. It’s also becoming a platform for artists, cultural workers, and care practitioners to present works-in-progress and left-field explorations. Those who are celebrating are encouraging others to celebrate too by either attending any of the existing public events listed below from February 2 to February 4, 2024—or hosting their own.
