This one is a genuine surprise.

If you followed our chemistry series this summer, you spent a week on linalool and met it in lavender, where it belongs. Now meet it somewhere you would never look: a wild berry from Nepal, carrying close to twice the linalool our Bulgarian lavender does.

Xanthoxylum is a prickly ash. The oil is pressed and distilled from the berry, it smells bright and green and a little citrusy, and almost nobody outside of Nepal has it on their shelf.

This is Karen's Nutmeg live from The Thriving Aromatherapist, playing at our usual Tea Time hour. Nutmeg is the spice everyone can smell from across the kitchen, and it is one of the best examples we have of an oil where reading the report changes how you use it. Most of the bottle is monoterpenes, which is the warm, bright, slightly peppery part. Under that sits an ether called myristicin at around a tenth of the oil, and that one is the reason nutmeg is diluted with care.

This week we open two bottles from the same plant, and the two reports could not look less alike.

Both are Daucus carota. One is our Carrot Seed from India, and its report is dominated by a single sesquiterpenol, carotol, at about seven tenths of the bottle. The other is our Carrot Seed Wild from France, the plant most of us know as Queen Anne's Lace, and its report leads with an ester, geranyl acetate, with pinene behind it. Same name on the label, two completely different oils in the hand, and you can smell the difference before you read a word.

Carrot Seed is also The Thriving Aromatherapist's oil of the month, so this hour is the setup: we get to know the oil together, and Karen blends with it all October inside Thrive.

This one is not distilled at all.

Copaiba is an oleoresin. It is tapped straight out of the trunk of a standing tree in the Brazilian rainforest, the same way you tap a maple for syrup. No still, no steam. The tree makes it and we collect it.

And if you were with us for the chemistry series, the report is going to look familiar. Copaiba is one of the richest sources of beta-caryophyllene we carry, by a wide margin.

Cardamom smells like chai, and its report reads like eucalyptus.

That is the surprise this week. The first thing on our current report is an ester, alpha-terpinyl acetate, which is the sweet, warm, spiced part everyone recognizes. The second is 1,8-cineole at close to a third of the bottle, the same molecule that leads eucalyptus and rosemary. A spice that is nearly one third cineole is a different thing to dilute than the smell suggests, and that is the whole lesson of the hour.

Our Grapefruit is more than eight tenths d-limonene, and it is cold pressed from the peel rather than distilled.

Both of those facts matter this week. The limonene is why it smells the way it does, bright and clean and immediate. The cold pressing is why we talk about the sun: a pressed citrus peel is where a sun rule on skin comes from, and grapefruit carries one. So we make the format that gets rinsed off, a sugar scrub, and we walk through the rule so you can use grapefruit with confidence.
